SPRING FLOWERS CRAFT FOR KIDS!

Did you know, that you can craft a variety of spring flowers just by up-cycling your ordinary throw-outs?

So Let’s get creative!

Crafting flowers!

Glorious spring is here, and everything is blooming once again!

Budding flowers, blossoming trees and an invasion of insects landing here there and everywhere, all doing what they know best.

IT’S GETTING WARMER!

Blue skies are back, the temperature is rising and we are glad to hang up our winter gear and downdress a little!

So based on all the wonderful flowers blooming during this warm season, I will show you how to make a Spring Flower Craft for Kids!

To craft these, I will use any odd throw-out material, plastic and card that we can recycle and convert into simple flowers!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR!

If you look at the bottom of most of these plastic bottles, there is a pattern, that funnily enough reflects a flower!

I will use some cardboard inner tubes, brown packaging card egg boxes, plastic water bottles, and anything that can be transformed into one of our spring-like flowers, and put together a bouquet, a bunch of flowers!

A bit like the pictures below, well as close to it as possible!

CHECK YOUR RECYCLING BAG! 

This is what you need to do, is to dive into your recycling bag, not literally Ha ha, just your head, and hands will do!

Now shuffle your odd containers, tubs, and bottoms and check them out and see if it has an interesting look, anything that can be cut and could likely pass for a flower, leaf, and so on. 

WHAT FLOWERS?

What flowers can you think of, or identify that remind you of spring?

let’s see:-

Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, pansies, lilies, bluebells, crocuses and snowdrops.

I have included a few flowers that I thought might be good to re-create with our throw-outs.

WHAT ABOUT FLOWERS?

So what is the reason why flowers bloom in spring? Let’s address this.

As the weather is changing and becoming warmer there are longer daylight hours.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

Furthermore, there is also an increase in moisture from the spring rains, and these types of conditions trigger the plants to come out of their dormancy and begin their reproductive cycle.

LET’S POLINATE!

When it’s time to pollinate, the flowers will attract the bees’ and butterflies attention with their beautiful colours, and because of that, the insects will transfer the pollen from plant to plant when they visit to feed on the nectar!

ARE YOU READY?

            RESOURCES.

  •  1-2 egg boxes/small yoghurt pots.

  • A few small plastic water/drink bottles.

  • Long inner cardboard tubes.

  • Sweet or small cupcake holder tray.

  • Straws/Scissors large/small.

  • Colourful acrylic paints/Brushes/Plate.

  • Soft cardboard packaging.

  • McDonald’s packaging (not shown).

  • Hot glue gun/wax sticks.

  • Masking tape/glue stick/double-sided tape.

LET’S GET STATED!

1) Cut in half a small plastic bottle.

4) Take a long cardboard inner tube, cut into long strips enough to curl around a pencil to get a tube like shape. Compress tightly and paint in green. These will be the stems.

6) Neaten them off, at the same time cut 4 rounded leaf like shapes as shown in image.

9) When painted I have use hot glue, and stuck one on top of another pushing down to secure in place. So I only used 2 cups.

10) Take small yogurt pots cut off the hard bit and them snip all the way around.

15) Neaten off, now stick using double sided tape onto a long stem, bunch them up as shown.

20) Take Mcdonalds packaging, or soft recycled packaging. Cut petals as shown with a slight point to one side. Curl a long piece to make the inside of a flower.

LET’S ELABORATE!

I have shown at least six different types of flowers to make depending on what recycling I had.

Because there are quite a few flowers to craft, I left out the painting part as that’s straightforward.

(Check out tips for further help).

YOUR CHOICE!

You can decide which flowers to make, from what resources you have.

WHICH RECYCLING MATERIAL?

The most common recycling materials would be egg boxes, small plastic water bottles and little yoghurt pots.

But there are always the McDonald’s Happy Meals you can save on the packaging there too.

   SOME TIPS.

     AS A GUIDE.
  • At the bottom of each plastic bottle is almost a flower design, when cutting the long strips use the indentations to guide your cutting.
     PANTING.
  • When painting the plastic you will need to layer the acrylic colours, to build up the density, unless your paints are quite thick and coat well.
     TRIMMING AND SHAPING.
  • Once you have your desired petals, trim the square ends with a more rounded or pointed shape, so the petals look more real.
  • EGG BOXES.
  • These are tricky to cut, perservere cutting around the cups, then neaten off with four petal shapes. When you finally paint them they hold the paint quite well.
  • MAKING THE LONG STEMS.
  • Cut up long sections from the long inner tube and use a pencil to shape it and round it up, then you can paint in green, although you may need to layer the paints and glue them together using the hot glue gun.
     STRAWS FOR STEMS.
  • It may be easier to use straws instead for the stems, all you need to do is paint them.
    CUTTING LEAVES.
  • When making the leaves as an extra touch, cut whatever shapes you desire, paint some leaf effects, and then glue them on with hot glue.
     FINAL TOUCH.
  • When you have finalized all the flowers,  you can arrange them in a vase, add some stones at the bottom to hold the stems in place, or roll them up in some fancy paper like a bouquet!

    1. Hey Michael, I am pleased you like my post! That’s what my website is about, for kids to up-cycle their regular recycling material and craft something fun with them! In the process to learn from it! Hopefully, educating at the same time how we can re-use our rubbish in another way and hold on to it, hence less rubbish on our landfilled sites!

    These were really cool crafts! I like the instructions you give and the tips to make things easier. And I loved the videos of flowers dancing. They added a lot of extra fun to your already fun post.
    What age group would you say these crafts would benefit? My youngest grandchild is 11. I do know a lot of people that work with children in church and at parks. I think they would love these ideas!

    1. Hi Scott, thanks for dropping by and adding your super comment!
      I’d say depending on how skillful your grandchild is especially with handling a pair of scissors, then any one of these flowers would be fine to attempt.
      The easiest would be cutting a cardboard drinking cup like the McDonalds one into a Sunflower, and the other cutting out sweet or buscuit moulds and gluing them on a stem.
      The plastic water bottles and the egg boxs gets a little bit harder, and the children will need adult guidance.
      Once they have established the shapes, and then stuck them together, painting would be a doddle, though messy so I would recommend disposable gloves, also if you don’t have a hot glue gun to hand, the double-sided tape would do the same job.

      That’s my aim to try to teach kids, as well as adults on how to utilize their throw-outs and up-cycle them, and to do that, my aim is to inspire them with fun and easy projects. We need to educate the next generation and in doing so help to save our planet!
