Check out how you can transform your egg carton into a cute talking pumpkin with her baby pumpkin family!
Egg Carton Pumpkin Craft to still do!
Halloween has come and gone, but in the spirit of Halloween, let’s keep it alive by giving kids what they like, and that’s to have them make a fun ‘Egg carton Pumpkin craft!’
There will be a chatting mum and her cute family of baby pumpkins!
I know kids will love to craft fun monsters, only in this case the subject will be ‘Pumpkins’ but with a twist.
WHAT RESOURCE?
I was looking at recycled material that I could use to achieve movement, and make it a fun project.
WHAT PACKAGING?
To do this, I found an egg carton. Although it doesn’t have the round shape of a pumpkin, it does have an open-and-close movement.
OPEN AND SHUT PACKAGING!
This movement would represent the mouth of the pumpkin, by opening and shutting it, as if it’s chatting away!
THE REAL DEAL!
Coming back to pumpkins and pumpkin carving, my grandson had a go scooping out the inside of the pumpkin and helping to carve out the pumpkin face!

Which is a simple concept, yet so easy to make!
An activity for Halloween, or a fun interactive project to craft anytime!
SOME TIPS!
  GATHER EGG BOXES!
- Save a few egg cartons, they will come in handy for different parts.
  PRACTICE FIRST!
- When cutting out the two egg cups to make one baby pumpkin, it’s trial and error to get it right, so have a practice first.
- Once you have cut out the initial egg cup shape fold it over and trim so the two cups touch.
  TRIM AND TIDY UP!
- Trim unnecessary parts to tidy up egg cartons for mummy and babies.
  CUTTING HOLE IN LID!
- When cutting out the hole in the top lid, judge it’s not too big so it’s within the middle of the half box you will glue on top. You could cut out the square hole before you glue on the half lid not too big, but enough to cover it over with the top half lid.
  CUTTING VINES!
- Cut long strips from the inner cardboard tubes, paint and then curl them up they may break, so be careful.
  ADDING MUMS’ TEETH!
- Squash the opening of the tooth a little to flatten it so you can glue it with hot wax onto the lid. Align the teeth so they meet the bottle section and touch the bottom rim of the box.
  WHITE PAINT AS BASE!
- As the egg carton is a grey or buff colour you will need to give it a base coat of white once or twice, so when dry the orange will be more vibrant!
  FELT TIP FEATURES!
- When the paint is dry, you can draw the mouth, eyes, eyebrows and teeth of all the family members which will accentuate the features!
  GLUING ON THE VINES!
- Once all the vines, leaves, and main stem are dry, you can glue them on with hot wax. Pull and twist the vines here and there to cover up odd holes and make them look like hair!
  ADDING A TEA LIGHT!
- As you open the egg carton, you can place a tea light inside to give it that glow, when it’s dark.
  CHATTING MUMMY!
- When you have finished crafting mummy pumpkin, you can open and shut the lid, now her mouth, and chat away for fun!
ENJOY THE AUTUMN WEATHER!
Halloween has come and gone, and there is the crisp cold weather following it! So what can you do that is still fun for your kids?
EXPERIENCE THE OUT-DOORS!
This is the perfect time of year to put on your kids’ puffer jackets wellies and hats and venture out into the parks. Once there they will run wild trampling on fallen autumnal leaves, having a kick-about and exploring the beautiful mixture of rustic colours that all trees portray overwhelming our pathways!
Here are some photos of my grandson, enjoying the out-doors!
SO LET’S GO ORANGE!
We touched upon autumn, pumpkins and how as the season changes into a colder climate we need to wrap up a bit more.
What colour depicts this season for me anyway is the colour orange!…… So let’s look at what KIDLY has to offer to wrap up your kids, protect them from all kinds of harsh weather and have that orange appeal!

The time is right, the weather is surely changing and getting much colder, and KIDLY have a very favourable selection of kids’ clothing that carries KIDY Label, and that is also that favourite colour ‘ORANGE!’ and if it’s not your colour then they also offer some very awesome shades of autumn too!
Hi Julia,
I wish I came across this article before Halloween, it would have been great to get into with my friends and their two boys.
Maybe we can use the same techniques for Christmas and create some little gifts for the school kids, what do you think?
I will share this article with my friends and my brother & sister-in-law to see if this is something they can do.
Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.
All the best,
Tom
Hey Tom, this is not only for Halloween, but a project you can convert into anything you want! It could be different vegetables, or even monsters! Now you know the way to put together a moving mouth, then that’s the basis of your chosen character!
As for creating little gifts for friends that’s so cute, they would be very impressed and intrigued how and what it was made from!
Here’s a thought you can even pop in a treat inside each mouth of the small cups, or a small novelty give-away too!
Thanks for your super comment, and love that you will pass on this activity!

Hi Julia, what an utterly adorable and creative craft idea! I love how imaginative you are – I would have never thought of an egg carton as a pumpkin! 🙂 And so cute on top of that!
This is such fun, and it empowers kids who cannot carve real pumpkins to make their own Halloween monsters! I will let my nephews know about this for sure.
I also like the step-by-step instructions and photos that make it so easy to follow, even for someone like me who isn’t very crafty.
Do you have any tips for adapting this project for a classroom setting with about 20 – 25 kids? I’m sure teachers and parents would love this idea! My sister teaches art in a primary school and has done many Halloween projects, but this would surely be a total hit!
Hey Lucie, so happy you found this project fun and different too! When I have a subject in mind I would think how I can make this using my recycling and up-cycling it, in an interesting way and in this case as it was Halloween, a pumpkin and why not a ‘Talking Pumpkin.’ To achieve this the egg carton opens and shuts and would make a perfect mouth, the rest is history!
I work with children in early years, and I reckon children between 3-4 years old could put together the baby pumpkins, with the help of an adult in the cutting and sticking part, so if there is enough egg cartons to go around then I am sure a class of 20 could pull it off. The teacher could be standing up front and demontrating it and the children could follow step by step. Or the teacher takes a small group at a time, alternatively groups of children can do different elements of the preparing and cutting and so on.
The production of egg cartons have changed over the years and we have lost the full egg-cup shape, so it also depends on the structure of the egg-cups and how you can cut them out.
Hope any of these suggestions help, but I would love to see what the children come up with and I can post them as an update!
Thanks for your super comment!

Thank you for sharing this engaging and eco-friendly craft idea!
It’s a wonderful way to inspire children to use their creativity while also teaching them about sustainability.
I’m sure many families will enjoy bringing this project to life and perhaps even come up with their own variations on the theme.
Thanks you for your lovely comment! My aim is for children to up-cycle their throw-outs and transform them into fun projects, at the same time adding some interesting facts to stimulate their minds, so while they are crafting they can learn too!
I do hope my ideas will inspire those who come across my posts, and give them plenty of ideas to at least have a go and have some fun being creative with their ordinary junk, hence recycling their rubbish!
Happy Crafting!

Wow, how outstanding! I’m not a very creative person but even I can follow the instructions that you give. The information tips that you gave were “great”. There is no other way to put it. I’m thinking I might be able to use some of this information on a new website and niche I’m considering. I will get in touch with you a little later. I’m excited.
Thanks for your fabulous comment Donnie, I am very happy to hear you liked this project and you were able to follow my demo! I try to keep the instructions child friendly, keeping it as simple as possible showing step by step images to aid in your projects creation!
I would love to offer a helping hand, just drop us a line!
Thanks.

Thanks, Julia for this wonderful information. I will share this with family and friends. I was not aware of such a novel idea as EGG CARTON PUMPKIN CRAFT prior to your article. Much appreciated. My nieces and nephews will love this.
Hi Joseph, I try to think beyond the norm, with some of these throw-outs, and up-cycling them into something completely different! In doing so I hope to inspire, those who come across this post, in being more creative, and have fun in the process. I am happy to hear you will share this project, as the more people make use of their recycling the less we have to throw-out! So it’s a win, win for all of us!
Thanks for your lovely comment!
