It’s easy to do, budget and kid-friendly too!
A LOVE SANDWICH FOR MUM!
Mums would love this handmade surprise and the best part it’s made with love!
USING THROW-OUTS!
Use your recycled materials, to make your pretend sandwich craft Mother’s Day idea, but create something a bit different to gift your mum!
RESPECT FOR BOTH!
In this post, I show how to highlight both gratitude for our mums and the importance of not wasting materials.
WHAT RESOURCES?
This is an opportunity for kids to ‘cook up’ their special sandwich using throw-away items, like newspaper, tissue or cellophane papers, bottle caps, plastic, sponges and or anything else that you can whip up and make it look like a delicious pretend sandwich craft!
THE IDEA BEHIND THIS?

While experimenting to make that perfect pretend sandwich, you can tie it into ‘Mother’s Day’ by saying ‘The best gifts aren’t bought, they’re made with love and imagination!’
Serving up love, a recycled pretend sandwich feast for Mum! Kids can turn scraps of material into beautiful sandwich art, and they can call it…..
The Love Sandwich’ but instead it’s a pretend sandwich craft Mother’s Day idea, that’s unique!
WHY A SANDWICH IDEA?
Well, we want to show gratitude for our Mums, and how mums, make great sandwiches, filled with love, care and a little bit of magic!
With that thought, why not combine both, and present Mum with a fun pretend yummy sandwich, that’s a bit different, although can also be part of anything else you want to add?
Whether it’s a special box of chocolates, a super exploding card bomb or beautiful flowers, hand-picked from the garden, then this would be a very thoughtful, caring piece of crafted art that Mums, would surely appreciate and the sentiment behind it!

Let’s show and shout out loud ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ showing our appreciation and love in the best way we know!
ART CHALLENGE!
You could set an art challenge here to highlight both gratitude for mums and the importance of not wasting materials.
The challenge name could be ‘The Love Sandwich’ a recycled art challenge for Mother’s Day.
This challenge would motivate your kids to explore ways to find, make and create a thoughtful gift!
SUSTAINABILITY!
This is a great way to show kids how to reuse materials in a fun way. It would spark creativity, and the best part is that no two sandwich craft Mother’s Day ideas would be the same, but very individual!
They will be handmade, personal and filled with love! At the same time encourage sustainability, made from recycled materials, found around the house or any throw-out junk!
SHOWING CARE!
It also teaches kids about both appreciation and gratitude for their mums, and caring for Mother Earth by up-cycling and not wasting materials hence a pretend sandwich craft Mother’s Day idea, that’s fun and unexpected!
Here’s a great video on how to make a nice chunky sandwich.
With a few useful tips!
HOW TO HANDLE THIS!
The basis of making a sandwich is a simple layering with different fillings. In the video, the chef shows layering but in a chunky way to give the sandwich depth and for it to look more inviting to eat, rather than a thin flat-looking sandwich that doesn’t look so inviting!
IMAGINARY INGREDIENTS!
So imagine you are going to look for items that look like or can be turned into similar sandwich ingredients.
Here are some ideas:
INGREDIENTS;
- Cardboard/padded envelopes or thin sponge for the slices of bread.
- Bottle caps or roundish shapes for Tomatoes.
- Old tissue paper or fabric scraps for the Lettuce.
- Bubble wrap or punch out a scrap of paper for cheese, or melted cheese.
- Straw for sandwich picks.
METHOD
Decide what kind of sandwich you want to make, and what kind of fillings you would like, then once you have cut, coloured and added the final touches, to create your sandwich fillers, you can start to build your sandwich, layering it as you go along!
TIME TO GET CREATIVE!
To make your pretend sandwich craft interesting you can get creative. For example, adding ‘mustard’ using yellow paint, or ‘meat’ by crumpling brown paper.
Next, you can write a note on the bread saying…….
‘Mum you’re the best thing since sliced bread’
This sandwich is made with love and a little bit of recycling magic!’
SO ARE YOU READY?
RESOURCES!
White packaging sponge, enough to make 2 slices of bread.
Slice of bread as a template. (not shown)
Pieces of coloured card stock or coloured packaging.
Green crepe paper for lettuce, or scrunch up green paper.
Different-sized scissors.
Orange and brown felt-tip pens.
Acrylic pens or paint. White/yellow. Fine paint brushes.
Small glass tumbler. (not shown)
Glue stick. (not shown)
LET’S MAKE OUR PRETEND SANDWICH!

SOME TIPS!
WHAT RESOURCES?
Look for a coloured card stock that will represent the colours of your sandwich fillers.
- It could be packaging, old scraps of paper or cards, or like I use an old pink envelope.
- If you can get hold of a white packaging sponge, that’s great otherwise, a packaging card, can be used to make the slices of bread.
DRAWING CIRCLES.
- Look for pots or small glass tumblers that you can use to draw around for the tomatoes and cucumber slices.
FELT-TIP PENS, MESSY.
- When colouring in the slice of bread, with felt-tip pens the ink can transfer onto your fingers, so be aware of this, but you can rub and blend the colour as well over the sponge material.
PRESENTATION.
- How you present this as a finished piece is up to you.
- You can glue all parts in place so they don’t slide off.
- Or tie it neatly with a ribbon.
- Alternatively, place the sandwich in a see-through container to hold it together and offer this as a whole gift.
MUMS MESSAGE.
- Finally, I drew up a simple message on a round piece of card and added a toothpick to insert it anywhere on the sandwich.
LOVE SANDWICH CHALLENGE!
Kids will craft the most creative ‘meals’ to celebrate their mums and Mother Earth.
Have kids think outside the box, get creative with your recyclables and make a fun ‘pretend sandwich craft’ that’s a great gift for mum and at the same time helping the planet!
MAKE IT FUN!

Most realistic sandwich.
Most creative ingredients.
Best Mother’s Day message.
CREATIVE DISH NAMES!
Get kids to come up with creative dish names like:
Loving Lettuce wraps.
Mum’s magic melts.
Finally, ask kids what’s the most unusual recycled material you’ve used.
The activity of making a DIY pretend sandwich for Mother’s Day would be a great subject to talk about.
Children will show an understanding of the resources they used, the texture, how they resembled different foods, their versatility and why they chose these items for their fillers within the sandwiches.
PRESENTATION.
When all is finalized and your pretend sandwich craft is completed, lay it on a special plate with a napkin before you gift it to your mum.
Here’s a thought, you could purchase a mumsy type of plate that is special for her put the pretend sandwich on it and wrap it up with tissue paper.
GO FOR THE REAL DEAL!
Once this project is completed, your kids can go for the real deal, in making a real sandwich.
What skills does a child learn from just learning to make a sandwich? Check out what The Learning Corner has to say!
This activity is like a dummy run, and making them think, about different fillers, how they might taste, the colour and the presentation.
Let them explore and lay out all the items they would need and oversee them make it for themselves, and the best part is they can present it to their mum, and they get to eat it for real!

This is an example of a real leafy type of sandwich, when done present it on a plate, make two one for mum, and one for you!

In this post, I show you how to create a yummy pretend sandwich craft Mother’s Day idea!
NOT THE CONVENTIONAL!
This activity is a bit different than your usual gifts for Mother’s Day. The whole idea is to combine a gift for Mum as a favourite sandwich and use up the odd resources available to make it, and at the same time recycling scraps, and packaging to help make it.
So here is a thoughtful gift, that has been made for the love of our mums and love for the planet by re-using throw-outs!
WHAT TO USE?
For example, with old scraps of cards, and packaging from your recycling bag that the colours will match up to your chosen sandwich fillers, you can up-cycle them and make a very realistic sandwich for Mum.
GO FOR THE REAL THING!
Then your kids can have a go at making the real deal, by organising and preparing a brilliant mumsy sandwich with real bread and chosen sandwich fillers showing that they can treat mum, just like how she would treat them!

Thanks for sharing this about creating a DIY pretend sandwich for Mother’s Day. My nieces and nephews will love this. You have presented a very good roadmap to get this done. I will save this article to share with family and friends.
I appreciate your comment Joseph. I tried to do something a bit different, crafting a gift for mum on Mother’s Day, like her favourite sandwich and considering how we can do this by re-using odd scraps to make our pretend sandwich, with the thought that we are making the best use with what we already have, so being kinder to our planet.
Thanks for droping, by and I am glad you will share this with your family and friends.
Julia.😊
Hi Julia,
I love this article, as I do all of your articles 🙂
I am going to share this article with my friend who has a 5 & 7 year old and they could do so much with this for his wife and their mother for mother’s day.
She is a great Mum and she would love to receive something like this and anything out of your other articles.
If they do put this to work then I will let you know how they do and what her reaction is on Mother’s Day.
Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing work you do.
All the best,
Tom
Thanks Tom, I am happy you liked this article, and will share it, and I hope your friends kids can get inspired to make something just a little bit different for Mother’s Day! It’s all about being creative and having fun at the same time to make a pretend sandwich, especially mums, might get a laugh or two, and then they can practice making the real thing. I thought doing something like this would be an excellent way to expand this project and allow children to learn about food, it’s value and how to present it!
Thanks a bunch for your excellent comment, and for viewing and sharing my projects, most appreciated.

Hi Julia
What a fun, creative idea. I like that the exercise of creating a pretend sandwich as will also encourage children to try making real sandwiches – an important step in developing the skills to eventually becoming self-sufficient in the kitchen. This is something that we are conscious of as our daughter moves through the tween years into the early teens. She makes her own breakfast and will heat up her own prepared foods so a next step could be making her own sandwiches. She still makes her own cards and we love those but its a great idea to use occasions like mothers’ day for other creative endeavors.
Thanks
Andy
Hi Andy,I am glad you liked this project, and is the next step for your daughter to become more proficient in the kitchen, islearning how to make a sandwich will be her next step! Leaving our kids to just get on with it, can be a bit daunting when you don’t know what the outcome will be, but it’s about them learning and finding out for themselves, isn’t that bad after all!
I wanted to have a different angle for crafting a gift for Mother’s Day, and combine, recycling to make the gift with, and I think Mums would appreciate that something was handmade and the thoughts behind it come from a good place.
Thanks for jumping in and leaving a super comment.
Happy Crafting.
Julia. 😊
