THOUGHT OF BOTTLE CAPS?

In this post, you will need to gather as many white bottle caps as you can find on your plastic milk bottles and keep them to one side, as we will use them to do some fun crafting with them!

We will be looking at some ‘Plastic Bottle Cap Craft Ideas’ you can make with your kids!

If you don’t have enough, ask family, or neighbours to hold on to them, as you will need a few to practice on.

A collection of white plastic bottle caps.

In this post, you will need to gather as many white bottle caps as you can find on your plastic milk bottles and keep them to one side, as we will use them to do some fun crafting with them!

So if you don’t have enough, ask your neighbours to hold on to theirs, and pass on to you!

MY INTENTION!

The white bottle caps, make a good base to draw on, so they are the ones you will need.

The white caps will be the Animal Faces, then you will build around the faces adding character to them, and when done, you will then recognise what animal it is!

FIND ANIMAL FACES!

Here are three animals you can refer to, which I will demo using these images of their faces.

WHAT TO DO!

You can check online your chosen animal faces and either do a quick sketch of them or download your images to print off, and then your kids can use them as a reference.

HELPING HAND!

The surface area of these bottle caps is quite small to draw on, so you may need to help out your kids when they are ready to draw the animal faces.

PRACTICE FIRST!

I discovered, that I had to practice drawing the animal faces to get used to the small area, so I drew around a bottle cap a few times onto white paper and kept drawing different style faces.

For example, the eyes could be lower or higher, the nose could be larger or smaller.

ENGAGING AND CREATIVE!

This is a great way for your kids to do some focus work, where they can look around for resources creating character for each animal making them more interesting!

SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT!

This activity is a super way for your kids to be invented and do something different with these bottle caps.

When they are finished they will not look like bottle caps anymore!

LESS IS MORE!

So why work with bottle caps? This is an opportunity for us to do our bit recycling lots of plastic throw-outs!

Furthermore, we would be helping to reduce the amount of rubbish that is accumulating within our oceans!

CREATING FUN FACES WITH CAPS!

There are several ways you can craft with bottle caps, for now, we shall be focusing on animal faces, and the best part is you can talk about each animal.

WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS?

Whilst crafting these animals with your children, this is an opportunity to discuss different facts about them.

Talk about where you would find them, for example, where they live, the climate, their environment, and what they eat.

In this way, they will build on their vocabulary and discover useful information about each animal.

Here’s a short video giving you a bit of information about Safari animals.

ARE YOU READY?

     RESOURCES.
  • 4- 6 White plastic bottle caps.
  • 4-6 Lolly sticks.
  • Black permanent marker.
  • Brown packaging papers/cards.
  • Animal patterned papers.
  • Coloured markers.
  • Glue stick double-sided tape.
  • Scissors.
  • Googly eyes.

I shall show three animals. First I demo the Lion, with a fixed head. Then following a similar technique to make the Zebra and the Monkey, with less parts than the lion, but this time with wobbly heads.

LET’S GO!

Check out this quick video on how to make your extendable concertina, folding one strip over the other make up to 3-5 sections not to long as animals head will droop down too much!
Here is the Zebra and the Monkey. When you shake the lolly sticks, their heads will wobble!
This gives the animal faces a fun element, for kids to play with and enjoy a giggle!

SOME TIPS!

    PRACTICE.

  • Draw animal faces on paper first, then when you are happy with the result draw directly onto the white cap with a permanent marker.

    YOU DECIDE.

  • I have shown how to craft three different safari animals, you can do one of your choice or any other animal.

    ANIMAL FEATURES.

  • The lion’s head with the frilled mane is one way to add texture, any animal you choose to craft can have similar patterns, like longer tails, larger ears, or googly eyes.

    INSIDE OF CAP.

  • Even though the caps are white in colour, they are still transparent, so to add depth cut a white or similar colour circle of the animals colouring and insert it inside the cap secure with glue, and it with make a better base to draw the animals’ face.

    ANIMATED!

  • Your animals can have fixed heads that don’t move or wobbly heads making them more fun, and adding movement.

    ANIMAL PAPERS.

  • I had some animal papers, although you can draw your take on their textured bodies.

    LOLLY STICK.

  • I added the lolly stick so you can hold it and shake it about, but you can leave the stick out if you prefer.

    PVA GLUE.

  • When using PVA glue, clean it up straight away, before it dries, as any adjustment will peel off in sections removing the pattern or features below the eyes.

    USING STICKY TAPE.

  • When gluing on the lolly stick trim the double-sided tape removing any excess tape.

ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY!

What are drink companies doing to help with the sustainability of plastic caps?

Lately, when you open a plastic bottle cap, have you discovered how you cannot remove the cap or lid without it being separated from the bottle top?

The reason for re-designing these caps is to prevent any dropping or losing of the bottle caps, so they stay intact.

Therefore it is easy to recycle plastic bottles as well as caps!

ANNOYING, BUT FOR GOOD REASON!

PET is an abbreviation for Polyethylene terephthalate, a thermoset plastic, that is recyclable and can be reused again!
