Here’s a delightful a 3D animation that tells the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears!

So remember the part where Goldilocks tries the three beds? Well, we aren’t going to make three traditional beds, such as because maybe Goldilocks didn’t want to disturb the beds since they were made up so perfectly, so instead, she sees a foldable ‘Z’ chair, which, when opened up, turns into a bed, and decides to sleep on that.

WHICH BED DOES GOLDILOCKS CHOOSE?

Here is the twist on his story, we shalln’t be making three beds, daddy, mummy and babies’ beds like in the story, as Goldilocks wanted to be fair and opened up the ‘Z’ chair, so this is what we shall be making.

HOW TO MAKE GOLDILOCKS ‘Z’ BED!

By now, if you have been following most of my posts, the majority of projects have been made with throw-out, packaging, or recycling, and we shall be making a foldable bed with packaging that can bend or fold, with some amendments, of course.

WHAT WORKS BEST

Look for or save your cereal bars packaging or anything rectangular in shape, not too deep, but you know you can get three sections out of it.

At this point, I am going to collect what I have and have a practice before I come back with a prototype.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT A ‘Z’ BED CHAIR!

Judging by the bed chairs in the picture, and to create it, you would need two box shapes the same size and half a box that would make the pillow part, and when folded up, you create a chair, and when opened up and laid on the floor flat as shown in the picture, it forms a bed.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR BED CRAFT

Find and gather any small boxes, preferably two of the same shape, and one about half the size of the others, and have a play with them.

I found that by taping them up with a long strip of tape, I could fold and unfold the boxes until they worked in unison, and resembled the’Z’ bed chair.

ARE YOU READY TO CRAFT GOLDILOCKS ‘Z’ CHAIR?

RESOURCES

Any 2 small boxes of cereal bars, or ice-cream packaging.
1 box half the size.
Masking tape/sellotape.
Coloured/patterned papers
Glue stick
Scissors

NOW LET’S MAKE THE ‘Z’ CHAIR BED FOR GOLDILOCKS!

Reduce the size of the box cutting and folding flap over. — 1) Reduce the size of the box by cutting the flap.

Fold over the flap and push into the groove. — 2) Fold over the flap and push into the groove tightly.

Push flap down tightly and seal with masking tape. — 3) Push down tightly and seal it with masking tape.

Grab the other two boxes align and tape into place. — 4) Grab the other two boxes align and tape them in place.

5) Practice folding and unfolding until all parts fall into place.

Create a 'Z' shape. — 6) Create a ‘Z’ shape.

Fold into a chair, to see if all boxes fall into place. — 7) Fold over if all works well. Now take apart make ready to cover with patterned paper.

Cover all boxes with pattered papers. — 8) Now you can cover all the boxes.The two whole ones and the Less than half size box with patterned paper.

Fold over the pillow to make a bed. — 9) Fold over the pillow to make a bed with pillow. When all works well seal all gaps with long strip’s of masking tapel

10) On the underside use different patterned paper.

TIME TO PLAY ACT WITH THE BED CRAFT

So I created a ‘Z’ chair bed, my take on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, so she doesn’t sleep on three different-sized beds, instead uses the chair bed, out of consideration.

Although I only made one, you could use this within the storyline, or have your kid make three different sizes, but a modern interpretation. And all are folding chairs!.

This is a great way for your child to tell the story, but their version….When Goldilocks went upstairs, she was very tired and wanted to have a lie down and not wanting to be rude, and sleep on the beautifully made beds all in three different sizes, her eye caught a folding chair in the corner……..and so on.

CHALLENGE YOUR CHILD, STEM RELATED

This is where it gets interesting. I show one way to make a ‘Z’ bed chair. How about challenging your child to think about how else they can make a similar chair, using different materials?

Ask them something like:

Can you make a longer bed? Sleeping head to foot and head to foot?
How about making it wider, so instead of creating a very long bed, go width ways. That would be interesting, don’t you think?

SOME TIPS!

PREPARING THE BOXES

When you have your 3 boxes, try not to damage them by ripping them open to take out cereal bars. Keep the shape intact. If necessary, tape parts of the boxes up to make them ready to cover with patterned paper.
Reduce one box to less than half, cutting, folding and tacking inside the gap.
Once you have established your 2.5 boxes, then cover them up with patterned papers.

USING MASKING TAPE

Use pieces of masking tape to hold the boxes in place.
Fold and unfold the boxes until you are happy that the boxes fold easily into a chair.
Now use longer strips of masking tape to hold all the boxes in place, so where each box meets, at the joint, stock a long strip along that line, fold and open. This is like a hinge to allow for movement.

USING PATTERNED PAPERS

When covering the boxes with your chosen papers, make sure the pattern follows through, especially if it’s text, so that it’s the right way up before you glue it into place with the glue stick,
Fold the paper like wrapping up a present at each end and glue down tightly so all folds look neat.

DON’T GET STUCK!

These ‘Z’ chair beds are so versatile, easy to set up, easy to open and a great addition to any child’s room.

I have owned one of these ‘Z’ chairs for years, going back to when my children were much younger, and I still have one today, which my grandson uses in all sorts of fun ways.
